The Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM) and Doctor-Patient-Society (DPS) teach basic clinical skills that are needed to perform a competent patient history and physical examination. During the semester, students are introduced to both simulated and real patients. At Holberton Hospital, consultants from various specialties provide didactic instructions to ICM students during patient rounds as part of their introduction to clinical medicine.

The ICM Department’s website serves as its primary means of communication for announcing course content, text and journal references, schedules, practice examinations and special announcements. In addition, the site provides x-rays and ECGs on a weekly basis as well as clinical cases for review. Periodically throughout the semester, the Department posts instructional pearls as learning aids. The Department’s emphasis is to prepare students for satisfactory performance on the National Board of Medical Examiners shelf examination in clinical medicine and the successful completion of USMLE Step One.
